Entretien Olivier Zuchuat (Microciné)

Regarder tenir feat.

Discursions in Time: Slow and Poetic Cinema(s) — A Guided Film Club

Image
Photo: Evolution of a filipino Family (2004/Lav DIAZ) "In this guided film club, we will explore the world of slow cinema(s) from the Lumière brothers through the early 2020s. We will hold each other accountable as we finally work through mammoth runtimes on films like Lav Diaz’s Evolution of a Filipino Family (10 hours and 43 minutes). We will learn together and from each other about diverse cinema traditions and filmmakers. And we will even debate whether or not there even is even an identifiable movement or aesthetic that we can accurately call “slow cinema.”  Each meeting will have recommended (not required) short readings, optional viewings, and required viewings. All films will be reasonably accessible to view from home at free or low costs. Each group meeting will be scheduled for 90 minutes over Google Meet."  Discursions in Time: Slow and Poetic Cinema(s) — A Guided Film Club (There Were No Gods Left) Program (March 8th - May 31st 2026) Meeting 1: Short(s) Introdu...

Lav DIAZ à propos de Magellan (SPÉCULATIONS)

Image

Time in the Age of Acceleration (Lav DIAZ)

Image
Perception, Stimuli and Narrative: Time in the Age of Acceleration (YouTube) 50'31" Play-Doc Festival (21 June 2024) SPANISH/ENGLISH The fact that film playback software offers the possibility of accelerating the speed of projection is not simply a technological matter; a dominant regime of perception is condensed in this innovation for impatient users. Who can concentrate on watching a film without interruption for more than three hours? Diaz’s cinema has always implied a twofold demand: the long, often fixed, shots and the total time of his films poses a perceptual challenge to the viewer: the dense matter of time, that abstract but real condition, is felt due to a laborious poetics of duration. Indeed, the Filipino filmmaker’s cinema of time constitutes a perceptual paradigm of resistance to the age of extreme acceleration.  Moderated by: Roger Koza

Minimalism, location & mute narrative (Nadin Mai)

"[..] Yet, all too often, the attention on Slow Cinema stops exactly there, however; the use of long‐takes, or its relative slowness. The danger with this, and indeed with using the term Slow Cinema is that it limits the view on the phenomenon. It focuses almost exclusively on time in film; a debate which is usually aimed at opposing popular film and art cinema. This view neglects several intriguing aspects, which add to the special experience of slow films, two of them being the art of minimalism and the use of location. [..] Characters tend to communicate by means other than the spoken word. It is about body language first of all. But their behaviours, actions, and decisions equally add to an almost mute narrative. If dialogue is present it often merely functions as verbal wallpaper, or everyday chitchat. Seeing With Another's Eyes: Slow Cinema and Marginalised Communities (Joe Turrell)

Image
Seeing With Another's Eyes: Slow Cinema and Marginalised Communities (Joe Turrell) 16 march 2021 (28min) Joe Turrell reads his essay from the Cambridge Review of Books, on Slow Cinema and in particular 3 auteurs : Pedro COSTA, Lav DIAZ and WANG Bing. ( text here  - January 25th 2020) "In documenting the precarious existences of their subjects these directors use techniques rooted in a distinct cinematic philosophy: ’Slow Cinema’. It is this approach that gives these films their power, and in employing these radical techniques these directors open the door to a relationship with their subject matter which is not available through conventional methods of filmmaking. [..] First, a historical/definitional note on the term ‘Slow Cinema’. Slow Cinema is not a precisely defined or delineated collection of films and filmmakers; |..] it is a useful way of grouping together a set of filmmakers arising largely out of the mid-1990s festival circuit, whose films share important aestheti...

Lav Diaz - Philippine Noir (NLR July 2021)

Image
" [..] Although he is a well-known figure there, Diaz’s films have been screened only sporadically in the Philippines itself, the product not only of political constraints—a number have been banned—but also of working beyond the bounds of an entrenched national film industry. [..] His oeuvre, though, remains little understood. On the global circuit, he is regularly acclaimed as a master of ‘slow cinema’. In interviews, Diaz rarely fails to correct the record: ‘it’s not slow cinema; it’s cinema.’ [..] A critical framework of this kind [Slow Cinema], encompassing such a heterogeneous set of directors of disparate geographies and lineages, has the potential to obscure as much as it elucidates. In Diaz’s case, there is an evident disconnection between the discourse of slow cinema and the concerns that animate his films. The historical, social and political character of the Philippines is his primary subject—‘the struggle is there. I cannot turn my back on it’—and his achievement is ...
