Divine Corporality: The Cinema of Albert Serra - A Video Essay (YouTube) 3'05" Film Essays by M.O. (11 Aug 2023) The films of Albert Serra have inspired thought on the ideas of the corporeal and the idea of presence, always regarding to a certain literary and cinematographic tradition. This essay seeks to find some moments in his films that better illustrate some of these ideas and how they relate with each other.  -- Films used in the video-essay: Honor de Cavalleria, Albert Serra (2006) - Andergraun Films El Cant dels Ocells, Albert Serra (2008) - Andergraun Films Història de la meva Mort, Albert Serra (2013) - Andergraun Films, Capricci Films La mort de Louis XIV, Albert Serra (2016) - Rosa Filmes, Andergraun Films Liberté, Albert Serra (2019) - Rosa Filmes, Andergraun Films Pacifiction, Albert Serra (2022) - Rosa Filmes, Andergraun Films

Albert SERRA présente Honor de Cavalleria

Image

As Slow As Possible (AV Festival 2012)

Image
AV Festival 12 : As Slow As Possible  International Festival of Art, Technology, Music and Film Newcastle, Gateshead, Middlesbrough and Sunderland (UK) 1st - 31st March 2012 [ PDF ] website In the run-up to London 2012 with its motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger” we propose an alternative slower pace and relaxed rhythm to counter the accelerated speed of today. Titled after ASLSP (As SLow aS Possible) by pioneering artist John Cage, the theme explores how artists have stretched, measured and marked the passage of time. Some works last the full 31 days, others are infinite in duration or move imperceptibly slowly: 14 seconds become 31 minutes, one hour becomes 24, and we can all dream together in a 12-hour sleep concert Century of Birthing (2011/Lav Diaz/The Philippines) Slow Cinema is a series of over thirty landmark films from leading international filmmakers, focused around slowness, and interwoven through AV Festival 12....

Déjà-vu (Köhler)

"[..]This map that did (as [Gilberto] Perez [ The Material Ghost ; 1998]) go out of style for a time, perhaps during the period of postmodernism, and definitely during the period when Fassbinder ruled the arthouse. But the map has been opened again by a new generation. Its influence can now be seen in films from every continent - too such extent that the Antonioni open film can be said to be in its golden age. There are some examples: the work of Apichatpong Weerasethakul from Blissfully Yours to Uncle Boonmee ; Lisandro Alonso's La Libertad through to Liverpool ; Uruphong Raksasad's Agrarian Utopia ; C.W. Winter and Anders Edström's The Anchorage ; Ulrich Köhler's Sleeping Sickness ; the entire so-caled Berlin School of which Köhler is a part; Albert Serra's Honour of the Knights and Birdsong ; James Benning; Kelly Reichardt; Kore-eda Hirokazu; Ho Yuang's Rain Dogs ; Jia Zhangke's Platform and Still Life ; Li Hongqi's Winter Vacation . Slower or Contemplative?

Review of : The " Aesthetic of Slow " By Matthew Flanagan ( 16:9 , Nov 2008) This article published over a year ago, explores a certain formal trend in contemporary cinema that seems to converge with the many themes developped here at Unspoken Cinema . Matthew Flanagan names it an " Aesthetics of Slow "; perhaps the distinct appelation explains why his researches never met " Contemplative Cinema ". I'll point out what they have in common and where they are distinguishable. Unspoken Cinema is focused on one particular definition, characterised by the "contemplative" aspect, one of many faces of this trend. I would like to see more of these alternate studies investigated and furthered deeper, either here or elsewhere. Unfortunately few critics are curious enough about this area of cinema to write more about it and generate a plural discourse around the various possible approaches to this new trend... The first thing I notice, is the familia...

Where is cinema heading to?

Short videos on this question answered by Jia Zhang-ke, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Lisandro Alonso and Albert Serra. Jia Zhang-ke (Chinese + French subs) 58" [ centrepompidou ] Jia Zhang-ke : "I'm very confident in the future of cinema and I'm confident about new media, like internet or cell phones, that allow the audience to watch movies. But I'm also certain that the movie houses will last long. It's extremely important that the audience could gather in a common place to watch a filmic work. The size of the screen begs for respect, both for the work and the audience. This mutual respect will continue. And this is how I envision the future of cinema. Merci" Hou Hsiao-hsien (chinese + French subs) 1'25" [ centrepompidou ] HHH: "Well it's not like writting... where we only need a pen and a paper. To work with cinema it's different. Question is : what is the difference between images and words? It's totally different. How are we going to w...
