So, it needed to reflect the formal and stylistic diversity; the varied stories, themes and emotional responses; and the extended geographic and cultural history of cinematic contemplation. That being said, on the other hand, it would also be inherently personal. Obviously, these two demands exis...

2023 Contemplative Cinema Canon (Cáit Murphy) Top10

Cáit Murphy Specialities: Claire Denis, auteurism, digital media, and social media Social media: @caitmurphyfilm on Instagram and Twitter Link: https://caitmurphyfilm.wixsite.com/portfolio My list may not be totally reflective of contemplative cinema, as some do not conform to the general tendencies. Le samouraï is possibly an outlier in its emphasis on genre and pulsating score. However, its contemplativeness and silence revise the noir/crime film in ways that sometimes feel closer to Bresson than to Columbia studio noirs. The depiction of non-human labour, repetition, and silence in the documentary Cow is my reasoning to include it. This is a new stylistic departure for Andrea Arnold, while maintaining her interest in complex female subjects and contemporary working life in Britain. My general feeling about contemplative cinema is a sense of not just duration (durée) but deep spatial awareness and ambiguity, a kind of palimpsest (like Jarman’s Blue ) in which spacio-temporality ma...

Michael Guarneri writer L'avventura (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1960) Fare un film è per me vivere. Two-Lane Blacktop (Monte Hellman, 1971) One for the road. Damnation (Béla Tarr, 1988) The storm rages outside, the fog thickens inside our brains and lungs. Sitting on a fart in the darkest corner of the bar, we think about all the things that went wrong and can't be changed... It is too late for everything now, it is all over... but maybe there is still a chance... Maybe, just maybe, after this drink, after this cigarette, something will happen and everything will change... Hope is a horrible thing indeed, and yet we can't help clinging on to it as we sink - slowly but surely - into nothingness. Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks (Wang Bing, 2003) "In the past, in China, there was a very explicit and severe system at work. What I mean is that the exercise of power by the government over the individuals was very direct and evident: the Communist Party ruled people through di...

André Dias Film teacher ESTC, Portugal https://estc.ipl.pt/cursos-cinema @aindanao http://facebook.com/aindanaocomecamos… I take ‘contemplative cinema’ to be a pronounced post-mid 80s tendency and a Southeast Asian one at that, mainly characterized by the feeling of an extended duration or, more precisely, an empty extension; so, on this point I consciously neglect possible European precursors to this cinema.
