STATS 2023 CCC canon

Thank you very much to all the 21 voters who participated in this Canon survey for the greatest Contemplative Cinema in 2023. The results for the final Top10 has been published here (in video). Now come the statistics along with the full tabulation of all 210 votes.

FINAL TOP10

  • Jeanne Dielman 10 votes
  • Satantango 9 votes
  • The Turin Horse 7 votes
  • Goodbye, Dragon Inn 5 votes
  • An Elephant Sitting Still 4 votes
  • Stalker 4 votes
  • Nostalghia 3 votes
  • The Death of Mr. Lazarescu 3 votes
  • Tiexi Qu: West of the Tracks 3 votes
  • Werckmeister Harmonies 3 votes

Like at the S&S 2022 canon, Jeanne Dielman makes the top of our present canon, with a total of 10 votes (=about half of the voters voted for it). No surprise. Congratulation to Chantal AKERMAN! However if we look at the accomplishments by auteurs, Béla TARR sits 3 of his films (Satantango, The Turin Horse, Werckmeister Harmonies) in the Top10 (thus splitting his 19 votes among three titles), and TARKOVSKY divides his 7 votes into 2 spots (with Stalker and Nostalghia). But if we expand to the full list of votes...

Béla TARR ranks 4 titles and racks up a total of 20 votes all by himself, topping the rest of auteurs by 5 points. But TSAI Ming-liang splits his 15 votes amongst 7 films, and Lav DIAZ amongst 8 films, which would have put them higher in the TOP if one film was focusing all their votes. This said, it means their filmography corpus is stronger overall, allowing them to rank several of their films, while ranking pretty high as well. On the other hand, HU Bo ranks 5 ex-aequo in the Top10, with a single film and 4 votes.

Looking at the score by nationality, Taiwan tops the ranking with 14 titles mentionned! Hungary wins 2nd place and only 5 titles, almost entirely thanks to Béla TARR (and 1 vote for JANCSO). USA splits the votes between 20 titles.
