Latest addition to the Library page at Unspoken Cinema: "The paper analyses the re-conceptualization of the intermedial trope of the tableau vivant in recent East European cinema through several examples from Hungarian and Russian films directed by György Pálfi, Kornél Mundruczó, Benedek Fliegauf, Béla Tarr, and Andrei Zvyagintsev. The tableau vivant in these films is not conceived primarily as an embodiment of a painting, the introduction of “the real into the image” (as Brigitte Peucker described), instead it appears more like the objectification of bodies as images, and something that we can associate with what Mario Perniola considers the “sex appeal of the inorganic” or “the Egyptian moment in art.” As such, the tableau becomes a powerful agent in generating metanarratives, offering a blueprint for a “big picture,” a comprehensive vision of the world (reinforced by recurring mythological themes like the genesis or the end of the world, the loss of Paradise, etc.). We will hold each other accountable as we finally work through mammoth runtimes on films like Lav Diaz’s Evolution of a Filipino Family (10 hours and 43 minutes). We will learn together and from each other about diverse cinema traditions and filmmakers. And we will even debate whether or not there even is even an identifiable movement or aesthetic that we can accurately call “slow cinema.”  Each meeting will have recommended (not required) short readings, optional viewings, and required viewings. Dans une perspective esthétique, nous étudierons la manière dont ces deux cinéastes mettent en valeur différents aspects du temps souvent considérés comme négatifs – la lenteur, la répétition, l’attente, le silence ou le vide – afin de déplacer l’attention du spectateur, non pas vers la narration, mais vers le temps lui-même, la matière première du film, et en même temps d’explorer une autre possibilité de l’art cinématographique. Il s’agit, chez eux, de filmer le temps. Mais comment le filmer et le rendre visible et sensible dans les formes filmiques ?
