Dry Leaf (Spéculations) podcast FRANÇAIS

Image
The Sealed Soil (Sepideh Amiri)

Latest addition to the Library page at Unspoken Cinema: "Society typically dictates the duration and manner in which we attend to objects, people, or events. In other words, the length and type of our attention are regulated by unwritten rules of behavior, forming a part of the social order. When someone focuses on something longer than usual, particularly something socially or aesthetically marginalized, it can challenge established social orders. When attention is prolonged beyond customary social norms, the usual controls over how we observe and perceive can be temporarily suspended, disrupting habitual modes of perception. Slow cinema filmmakers slow down the rhythm of the film and extend shots to encourage this sustained attention. Through slowness, they not only slow the narrative but also challenge social norms and how we typically engage with what we see." Amiri, Sepideh;  Marvā Nabīlī’s The Sealed Soil as Slow Cinema .

Designing Calm (Sara Johnston)

New addition to the Library page at Unspoken Cinema: "This thesis explores Slow Cinema as a form of quiet resistance to contemporary cultures of acceleration through carefully designed mise-en-scène and sustained duration. As life is increasingly shaped by speed and efficiency, cinema has mirrored these changes implementing rapid editing and spectacle. Drawing primarily on Byung-Chul Han’s (2015) exploration of “burnout” provides a framework for understanding these changes.  By situating this thesis within this cultural context, the research considers how slow cinema disrupts linear time and space and offers an alternative affective experience that encourages contemplation, relaxation and stillness as a response to the exhausting, pressurised current cultural condition.   Through a visual analysis of Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003) directed by Tsai Ming-liang, this thesis examines how production design creates interstitial spaces that function as temporal containers, al...

Interview with Ian Darling (THE VALLEY)

Image
From the director’s statement on his website : “This project challenges traditional documentary storytelling. I aimed to create an immersive, meditative experience that invites patience and openness from viewers. With its mostly silent narrative, the film emphasises the unspoken — highlighting the power of stillness and the sounds of silence. It invites viewers to interpret and create their own stories for each character, filling in the quiet moments, and embracing the ambiguity. Its length and rhythm requires a conscious commitment, but I believe this approach offers a meaningful journey — one that suspends the noise of modern life and offers a space for empathy and reflection. Ultimately, THE VALLEY is a contemplative journey — a chance for viewers to slow down, breathe, listen and observe. It celebrates the power of solitude and the importance of community. In these challenging times, it offers a quiet affirmation of inner peace, resilience, and the profound beauty of stillness.” ...

Valley Time (a film review of Ian Darling's The Valley, 2026)

Image
“Valley Time” is a peculiar pace of life. Such life is nonchalant, carefree, and at times delightfully indifferent. Adopted by the residents of the village of Kangaroo Valley (shy of 900 souls) strung along the meandering Kangaroo river, nestled amongst rocky sandstone cliffs. This secluded settlement sits a mere two-hour drive south of Sydney, in Australia. Throughout this silent landscape, distances stretch vast until the next neighbour. Community is bound not by proximity, but by a shared introspective state of mind. Such space is unique to the mountainous and isolated terrains. Such pace is unique to the insulated people living far apart yearning for each other.  The documentary The Valley (2026) crafts a multifaceted, deeply evocative portrait of this remote enclave over the course of 3 hours. It shifts from one dairy farmer/painter to a gardener cultivating vegetables to a baker kneading dough to lonesome locals running errands… and so on, and so forth. A seamless human tape...

Slow Cinemas chart (Discursions in Time)

Image
Line up of Joshua Polanski's Guided Film Club 2026 mapped out in a "Slow Cinemas" chart with a horizontal axis from Slower to Slow and a vertical axis from Quiet to Talkative. The Contemplative Cinema occupies the lower left quadrant (much slower and practically without dialogue), while the Baltic Poetic Documentary occupies the right half (with quick edit and sometimes voice over commentary), without overlapping. Outside the Slow Cinemas circle are Avant Garde experiments.

Ma: The Japanese Secret to Contemplation and Calm (Book)

Recent addition to the Bibliography page  at Unspoken Cinema: "The traditional Japanese concept of ma refers to a pause or a space, "the moment of no action, the stillness and silence that is filled with more powerful energy than the moments of action" on the classic Noh stage. It also refers to the pauses taken in between notes by a shakuhachi flute player or the spaces between stones in a Zen garden which reveal unexpected vistas and perspectives. The eighteen thought-provoking essays in this book present the work of talented writers and artists with vast experience in the fields of Japanese art, religion, music and philosophy. They show us how the experience of ma in the traditional Zen arts and practices can be used to create a greater awareness of our surroundings to vastly improve our lives in many other areas."

Ichigo Ichie 一期一会 "Une fois, une rencontre". Yori...

Hamvas Béla út 11. (YouTube) 55'36" (Kis ZenFilms) 15 Jan 2026 * * * Hamvas Béla út 11. / Hamvas Béla street 11. (2025/Janos KIS/Hungary) a review by Benoit Rouilly Living the weight of an hour, a man takes us through the mundanity of unfettered existence. How much does an hour of human life weigh? Eight moments, eight plans-séquence tell the tale of a daily routine. The slightest gesture is well-rehearsed by life-long habits, not even conscious or calculated. A prosaic choreography of solitude takes place before our eyes. Not a single word is uttered as the unnamed protagonist undertakes repetitive chores. This individual is all of us when nobody’s watching. The muscle memory of his alienation draws lonely circles throughout his apartment. It is as much a chronicle of his life than it is a document of his living space. A modest home on the 13th floor in a Budapest social project from the 60ies. A socialist-era prefab apartment block. The washed-out facade is a vertiginous p...

Perdre son temps (France Culture)

Image

Democratic Cinema (Paul Schrader)

164. Slow Cinema as Democratic Cinema -- Paul Schrader (YouTube) 46'05"  (Graham Culbertson) 25 august 2025 "In normal cinema, the goal of the director is to control the audience, to direct their gaze, to dictate their emotions. What does it mean when directors make movies where the audience is allowed to decide what the film means to them? Legendary filmmaker Paul Schrader (screenwriter of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull; director of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters and First Reformed) ,  joins me to discuss his book Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer and the democratic nature of slow cinema."

Why a Perfect Day Looks Nothing Like You Imagine (Cinevision)

Image
Why a Perfect Day Looks Nothing Like You Imagine - Perfect Days (2023) (YouTube) 12'06" (Cinevision) 10 August 2025 "In today's video we'll be exploring Wim Wenders' "Perfect Days," a film that completely shifts how we think about finding meaning in ordinary life. We follow Hirayama, a man living alone in Tokyo who spends his days cleaning public restrooms, driving through the city, and listening to classic rock on cassette tapes, yet there's something incredibly profound about his simple existence that makes you question what we're actually missing in our own lives. Wenders doesn't give us dramatic chase scenes or epic heroes. Instead, he invites us to witness the beauty of everyday moments through that intimate 4:3 aspect ratio that makes you feel like you're right there with Hirayama as he pauses to notice a tree through a window or finds connection in the smallest details. His work isn't just a task, it's an act of pres...
